AR12,1,2 1Relating to: supporting an initiative seeking a just and peaceful resolution of the
2situation in Cyprus.
AR12,1,43 Whereas, this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and
4occupation of Cyprus; and
AR12,1,65 Whereas, the Republic of Cyprus has been divided and occupied by foreign
6forces since 1974 in violation of United Nations Resolutions; and
AR12,1,97 Whereas, the international community and the United States government
8have repeatedly called for the speedy withdrawal of all foreign forces from the
9territory of Cyprus; and
AR12,1,1210 Whereas, there are internationally acceptable means to resolve the situation
11in Cyprus, including the demilitarization of Cyprus and the establishment of a
12multinational force to ensure the security of both communities in Cyprus; and
AR12,2,213 Whereas, a peaceful, just and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem would
14greatly benefit the security, and the political, economic and social well-being of all

1Cypriots, as well as contribute to improved relations between Greece and Turkey;

AR12,2,53 Whereas, the United Nations has repeatedly stated the parameters for such a
4solution, most recently in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1217, which
5was adopted on December 22, 1998, with United States support; and
AR12,2,106 Whereas, United Nations Security Council Resolution 1218 adopted on
7December 22, 1998, calls for reduction of tensions in the island, through a staged
8process aimed at limiting and then substantially reducing the level of all troops and
9armaments in Cyprus, ultimately leading to the demilitarization of the Republic of
10Cyprus; now, therefore, be it
AR12,2,14 11Resolved by the assembly, That the Wisconsin assembly endorses United
12Nations Security Council Resolution 1217, as supported by the United States, to
13undertake significant efforts in order to promote substantial progress towards a
14solution of the Cyprus problem in 1999; and, be it further
AR12,2,16 15Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution
16to each member of this state's congressional delegation.
