2011 Assembly Joint Resolution 102
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Jean Lucey.
Whereas, Jean Lucey passed away of natural causes on December 7, 2011, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and
Whereas, Jean Lucey was the sixth of nine children born to immigrants from Greece, growing up in Milwaukee's Greek community on the city's east side; and
Whereas, Jean graduated from Lincoln High School, served as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) during World War II in Washington, D.C., and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; and
Whereas, Jean met her future husband, Patrick Lucey, in 1949 at a meeting regarding the future of the Democratic Party in Wisconsin; and
Whereas, Jean and Patrick Lucey were married in 1951 at Gesu Catholic Church in Milwaukee and became a team, touring the state in the interest of Democratic Party development and unity; and
Whereas, Jean Lucey helped her husband become the Wisconsin Democratic Party chairman in 1957 and helped build the Lucey Realty Service from their home into one of Madison's largest real estate firms; and
Whereas, Jean Lucey remained active in state politics when Patrick became governor of Wisconsin in 1971, living up to her fiery reputation and never shying away from the spotlight; and
Whereas, Jean Lucey thrived while living in Mexico after Patrick was appointed ambassador under President Jimmy Carter, becoming proficient in Spanish, traveling the country, collecting local art, and becoming familiar with the culture and customs; and
Whereas, Jean Lucey continued to live her life after politics as a unique and free spirit who was ahead of her time and never fit a certain mold; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted and extraordinary public service Jean Lucey contributed to her community and this state, express their sorrow at her death, and extend their condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Jean Lucey's husband, Patrick, and their children, Laurel, Paul and David, and her sisters Georgia and Sophia.
