ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming March to be Hunger Takes No Holiday Month.
Whereas, the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank organized the third annual Hunger Takes No Holiday, which began on February 2, 2012, and runs through April 9, 2012; and
Whereas, during the past two Hunger Takes No Holiday events, enough contributions have been made to provide over 100,000 meals to those in need in the city of Superior and throughout Douglas County; and
Whereas, the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank recovers nationally and regionally donated food, that might otherwise end up in a landfill, and provides it to non-profit agency partners and people in need in the city of Superior and Douglas County; and
Whereas, in 2011, the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank recovered and distributed 358,195 pounds of food for local residents, enough food for 286,556 meals; and
Whereas, the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank recovers food from national manufacturers when they overproduce goods, from Superior's Essentia Health when it has extra meals, and from Super One when it has a surplus of deli meat, produce, or dairy products; and
Whereas, the food rescued by Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank is free, with every $1 donated providing $10 worth of food, or enough food for five meals; and
Whereas, the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank has set an ambitious 2012 fundraising goal of $25,000, the equivalent 125,000 meals, by increasing awareness of the Hunger Takes No Holiday event through local, county, and statewide proclamations in the month of March; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That in appreciation of Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank's efforts to combat hunger in Northern Wisconsin through the Hunger Takes No Holiday event, the legislature of the state of Wisconsin proclaims March to be Hunger Takes No Holiday Month; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this resolution to the executive director of the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.
