2017 Assembly Joint Resolution 119
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Bishop Robert C. Morlino.
Whereas, Robert Charles Morlino was born on December 31, 1946, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to Charles and Albertina; and
Whereas, Robert Morlino attended the Jesuit-run Scranton Preparatory High School and, upon his graduation, entered the seminary for the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, being ordained to the priesthood in 1974; and
Whereas, Father Morlino earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in philosophy from Fordham University and the University of Notre Dame, respectively, earned a Master of Divinity degree at the Weston School of Theology, and earned a doctorate in Moral Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University located in Rome; and
Whereas, Father Morlino taught philosophy at several Roman Catholic institutions, including Loyola College (Baltimore), St. Joseph University (Philadelphia), Boston College, the University of Notre Dame, and St. Mary's College (Indiana); and
Whereas, beginning in 1981, Father Morlino served the Diocese of Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he administered several parishes; and
Whereas, in 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed Father Morlino the Ninth Bishop of Helena, Montana; and
Whereas, Bishop Morlino was appointed the Fourth Bishop of Madison on May 23, 2003, and installed on August 1 of that year; and
Whereas, Bishop Morlino served the Diocese of Madison for more than 15 years; and
Whereas, Bishop Morlino received both the Cardinal von Galen Award and the St. Edmund's Medal of Honor in 2008, was honored by the Department of the Army in 2009 and, in May 2018, received the St. Thomas Aquinas Medallion; and
Whereas, Bishop Morlino ordained 40 men to the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church; and
Whereas, Bishop Morlino died in Madison on November 24, 2018; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature salutes Bishop Robert C. Morlino's public service and honors his achievements; and be it further
Resolved, That that the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to the Diocese of Madison.
