2017 Senate Joint Resolution 23
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: declaring April to be Health and Wellness Month.
Whereas, April is Health and Wellness Month within the Milwaukee Public Schools, where health education and physical activity are an important part of the curriculum; and
Whereas, the schools also encourage collaboration with farms and local food producers so children learn where their food comes from, have access to fresh food, and support local growers; and
Whereas, access to healthy food resources can be affected by socioeconomic status; and
Whereas, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes are leading causes of death for African Americans in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and
Whereas, the CDC has reported on health disparities for African Americans in premature death from stroke and coronary heart disease, infant mortality, diabetes prevalence, and obesity prevalence; and
Whereas, health disparities by socioeconomic status exist and persist in the City of Milwaukee; and
Whereas, innovative and collaborative efforts with communities can be used to promote health and wellness across the state; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That April is declared Health and Wellness Month in Wisconsin.
