2the importance of giving parents the choice in the educational path for their
3children.
AJR99,1,54 Whereas, the school choice program was first launched in Milwaukee in 1990
5to offer low-income students the opportunity to pick their schools; and
AJR99,1,86 Whereas, the Milwaukee parental choice program was the first of its kind in the
7United States and has since grown to educate more than 28,700 students in 126
8schools; and
AJR99,1,109 Whereas, if the Milwaukee parental choice program was a school district, it
10would be the second largest in the state; and
AJR99,1,1211 Whereas, the Wisconsin Legislature expanded school choice to Racine in 2011,
12state-wide in 2013, and to the special needs scholarships in 2015; and
AJR99,1,1413 Whereas, the statewide and Racine programs educate more than 7,500
14students in 187 schools; and

1Whereas, choice schools see significant success in student achievement and are
2regularly lauded as innovators in education; and
AJR99,2,43 Whereas, the largest school choice option in Wisconsin is open enrollment, with
4over 55,000 students statewide transferring school districts; and
AJR99,2,65 Whereas, charter and virtual schools provide another educational option to
6families; now, therefore, be it
AJR99,2,10 7Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
8Legislature hereby declares January 21–27, 2018, School Choice Week and
9recognizes the importance of giving parents the choice in the educational path for
10their children.
