SJR14,1,1 1Relating to: recognizing March 6, 2017, as World Lymphedema Day.
SJR14,1,42 Whereas, lymphedema is a chronic, debilitating disease that results in
3disfiguring swelling due to the accumulation of fluid in the limbs when the lymphatic
4system is damaged; and
SJR14,1,65 Whereas, it is estimated that lymphedema affects up to 10 million Americans
6and 170 million people worldwide; and
SJR14,1,97 Whereas, because the disease is aligned with lymph node removal, the disease
8may affect up to 30 percent of women who have survived breast cancer and may also
9affect people who have survived prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and melanoma; and
SJR14,1,1110 Whereas, veterans may suffer the disease as a result of battle injury or trauma
11from surgery; and
SJR14,1,1312 Whereas, lymphedema can be hereditary and affect children born with the
13disease; and
SJR14,1,1514 Whereas, the United States Senate established World Lymphedema Day in
152016; and
1Whereas, the Lymphatic Education & Research Network (LE&RN) is working
2to bring attention to lymphatic diseases and lymphedema in the hopes that new
3treatments will be discovered and a cure can someday be found; and
SJR14,2,54 Whereas, the Wisconsin Chapter of LE&RN is working to bring awareness of
5the disease to the people of our state; now, therefore, be it
SJR14,2,7 6Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That March 6, 2017, is
7recognized as World Lymphedema Day in Wisconsin; and, be it further
SJR14,2,9 8Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
9resolution to the Wisconsin Chapter of LE&RN.
