AB36,1,3 1An Act to create 20.292 (1) (fc) and 38.04 (34) of the statutes; relating to: grants
2to technical college students for apprenticeship expenses and making an
3appropriation.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
This bill creates a grant program under which the Technical College System
Board may award grants of up to $1,000 to technical college students who have
undertaken an apprenticeship program in conjunction with their course of
instruction at the technical college. These grants may be awarded only to assist
students in paying materials expenses associated with the apprenticeship program,
including costs of purchasing tools, clothing, equipment, and supplies. The TCS
Board must establish an application process and criteria for awarding these grants,
which criteria must consider the financial need and anticipated or actual expenses
of the applicant. The TCS Board may award grants totaling up to $100,000 per
academic year.

enact as follows:

AB36,2 1Section 2. 20.292 (1) (fc) of the statutes is created to read:
AB36,2,32 20.292 (1) (fc) Student apprenticeship grants. The amounts in the schedule for
3grants to technical college students under s. 38.04 (34).
AB36,3 4Section 3. 38.04 (34) of the statutes is created to read:
AB36,2,115 38.04 (34) Student apprenticeship grants. (a) From the appropriation under
6s. 20.292 (1) (fc), the board shall award grants to students enrolled in technical
7colleges who have undertaken an apprenticeship program, as defined in s. 106.001
8(4), in conjunction with their course of instruction at the technical college. Grants
9may be awarded under this subsection only to assist students in paying materials
10expenses associated with the apprenticeship program, including costs of purchasing
11tools, clothing, equipment, and supplies.
AB36,2,1612 (b) The board shall establish an application process and criteria for awarding
13grants under this subsection, which criteria shall consider the financial need and
14anticipated or actual expenses of the applicant. Grants awarded under this
15subsection may not exceed $1,000 per student. The board may not award grants
16under this subsection totaling more than $100,000 in any academic year.
AB36,4 17Section 4. Effective date.
AB36,2,1918 (1) This act takes effect on the day after publication, or on the 2nd day after
19publication of the 2019 biennial budget act, whichever is later.
