AB56-ASA2,1,2 1An Act to create 36.65 (5) of the statutes; relating to: University of Wisconsin
2System reports regarding remedial courses in English and mathematics.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB56-ASA2,1 3Section 1. 36.65 (5) of the statutes is created to read:
AB56-ASA2,1,44 36.65 (5) Remedial course reports. (a) In this subsection:
AB56-ASA2,1,65 1. "High school" means a school in this state in which the high school grades
6are taught, including a school classified as a senior high school under s. 115.01 (2).
AB56-ASA2,1,87 2. "Placement test" means an English or mathematics placement test that is
8required upon a student's admission to the system.
AB56-ASA2,1,109 3. "School" means a public school, including a charter school, as defined in s.
10115.001 (1), and a private school, as defined in s. 115.001 (3r).
AB56-ASA2,1,1211 4. "Student" means a student who is admitted to the system immediately
12following high school graduation.

1(b) By September 1 of each year, the system administration shall do all of the
2following:
AB56-ASA2,2,53 1. Determine the high schools with more than 6 students who, based on their
4performance on placement tests in the preceding 12 months, are required to take
5remedial courses in English or mathematics.
AB56-ASA2,2,126 2. Submit a report to the appropriate standing committees of the legislature
7under s. 13.172 (3) and state superintendent of public instruction that identifies the
8high schools determined under subd. 1. and, for each high school so identified, the
9number of students who, based on their performance on placement tests in the
10preceding 12 months, are required to take remedial courses in English or
11mathematics. The board may not disclose in the report the identity of any student
12who is required to take a remedial course.
AB56-ASA2,2,1513 (c) Upon receipt of a report submitted under par. (b) 2., the state
14superintendent of public instruction shall provide a copy of the report to each school
15board.

AB56-ASA2,2,1817 (1) This act takes effect on the first day of the 7th month beginning after
18publication.
