Current law authorizes DNR to pay a portion of the costs of a project to remove contaminated sediment from Lake Michigan or Lake Superior or a tributary of Lake Michigan or Lake Superior if the project is in a water body that DNR has identified, under the federal Clean Water Act, as being impaired and the impairment is caused by contaminated sediment. Current law authorizes the issuance of bonds for this purpose.
This bill increases the bonding authority for sediment removal projects by $5,000,000.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:
Section 1. 20.866 (2) (ti) of the statutes is amended to read:
20.866 (2) (ti) Natural resources; contaminated sediment removal. From the capital improvement fund, a sum sufficient for the department of natural resources to fund removal of contaminated sediment under s. 281.87. The state may contract public debt in an amount not to exceed $22,000,000 $27,000,000 for this purpose.
