ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the service to the Assembly of Thomas T. Melvin.
Whereas, The Honorable Thomas T. Melvin, Chief Clerk of the Wisconsin State Assembly, has been a dedicated employe of the Assembly since January 13, 1965; and
Whereas, Tom has faithfully discharged his responsibilities as Chief Clerk of the Wisconsin State Assembly, being first elected to that position in January 1987; and
Whereas, Tom began his legislative career as an assistant records clerk and became the assistant chief clerk in 1967, serving in that position for 20 years, under 8 chief clerks; and
Whereas, Mr. Melvin has dedicated his adult life to public service and in particular service to the legislative branch of Wisconsin government; and
Whereas, Tom's deep devotion to his duties, his strong belief in the democratic process and his desire to give of himself to assist those in need led him to be recognized nationally by his colleagues on 2 separate occasions, as he was appointed to serve on the executive committee of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries; and
Whereas, during the past 30 years, Tom Melvin has assisted 429 members of the Assembly in helping them make the transition to elected public office and tutored them on the operations of the legislature; and
Whereas, his guidance and assistance have played a major role in 2 former members of the Assembly being elected Governor, one being elected Lieutenant Governor, 11 being elected as Representatives to the U.S. Congress, one being elected State Treasurer, one being elected Mayor of the City of Milwaukee and countless others being elected to higher public office; and
Whereas, Thomas T. Melvin has chosen to retire from public service on January 31, 1995, and to begin a new life of leisure, enjoying the benefits of a Wisconsin society he has played a role in enhancing over the past 30 years; and
Whereas, Tom will be missed by the members of the Assembly and by his colleagues and by the general public that he served so well and by legislators who relied on him for guidance and information; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That: the members of the Legislature of the State of Wisconsin congratulate Thomas T. Melvin on his 30 years of service, commend him on his distinguished career and wish him the best of everything upon his retirement.
