1995 Senate Joint Resolution 20
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Education Project an official sesquicentennial project.
Whereas, Wisconsin will celebrate 150 years of statehood in 1998; and
Whereas, the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Education Association has proposed building a tall ship reminiscent of those found sailing the Great Lakes 150 years ago to coincide with Wisconsin's sesquicentennial; and
Whereas, Wisconsin has long been known as a great shipbuilding state and years ago these majestic vessels were built by hundreds of settlers along Wisconsin's shores; and
Whereas, the magnificent tall ships, and the bold men and women who sailed them on Lake Michigan more than a century ago, were responsible in large measure for the development of our region; and
Whereas, tall ships spurred the trade and commerce which developed this native territory into the great state of Wisconsin; and
Whereas, more than 100 years ago traders bartered with Wisconsin's Native Americans, and the Menominee Nation has thereby donated 6 230-foot-tall, sacred, old-growth white pines for the masts of the ship; and
Whereas, this tall ship will be used as a teaching vessel to educate Wisconsin's children and citizens about the Great Lakes ecosystem and Wisconsin's rich cultural heritage; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature designates the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Education Project as an official sesquicentennial project.
