1997 Senate Joint Resolution 4
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming the week of June 29 to July 5, 1997, National 4th Infantry Division Week.
Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division of the U.S. army, commonly called the Ivy Division, was organized in Camp Greene, North Carolina, in November 1917 and was the only American division of the army to serve in both the French and British sectors in World War I; and
Whereas, the 8th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division was the first allied unit to land at Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944; and
Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division was the first U.S. division to liberate Paris; and
Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division continued to serve in Europe for 9 years after World War II ended, first as part of the occupation force and then as part of NATO's peace-keeping efforts; and
Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division served valiantly in the Korean War; and
Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division remained undefeated after 4 years of combat in Vietnam and served courageously in Operation Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf War; and
Whereas, the over 12,000 members of the 4th Infantry Division, now stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, participate in the U.S. army's new test program to help train the armed forces of the 21st century; and
Whereas, the 4th Infantry Division Association holds annual reunions in various places around the country, most recently in Seattle in 1996, Boston in 1995 and Cleveland in 1994; and
Whereas, for the first time in Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Chapter of the 4th Infantry Division Association will be hosting the 79th Annual National Reunion of the 4th Infantry Division Association in Milwaukee during the week of June 29 to July 5, 1997; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the week of June 29 to July 5, 1997, is proclaimed "National 4th Infantry Division Week".
