Senate Resolution 2
ENGROSSED RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and times of Chief Benjamin W. Winneshiek of the Ho-Chunk Nation.
Whereas, Benjamin W. Winneshiek was born on February 22, 1917, in Dells Dam, Clark County, Wisconsin, and spent his formative years in the Dells Dam and Neilsville area, attending the Neilsville Indian School; and
Whereas, Benjamin W. Winneshiek was a distinguished veteran of World War II and the last tribal survivor of the Wisconsin 32nd Red Arrow Division, serving from 1940 through 1945 with the 128th Infantry Regiment through the New Guinea, Papua and Leyte and Luzon, Phillipines campaigns, and was decorated with the Bronze Star and many other citations for his bravery in action; and
Whereas, Benjamin W. Winneshiek, on March 8, 1952, married Imogene Swallow, a union that gave life to daughters Paula, Annie, Sadie, Eunice and Rachel and sons Clayton and Forrest and sustenance to stepson Howard Swallow; and
Whereas, Imogene Winneshiek passed from this earth on April 27, 1998; and
Whereas, Benjamin W. Winneshiek, who served proudly as the traditional Tribal Chief of the Ho-Chunk Nation, passed away on May 5, 1998, at the age of 81; and
Whereas, Benjamin W. Winneshiek, man, soldier, patriot, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and leader of a great Indian Nation, will be dearly missed by the many whose lives he has touched; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, That the members of the Wisconsin senate commend the life and service of Benjamin W. Winneshiek, express their sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his family and friends and to all of the members of the Ho-Chunk Nation; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to his daughters Paula, Annie, Sadie and Rachel Winneshiek and Eunice Wamego; and to his sons Clayton Winneshiek and Howard Swallow.
