1999 Assembly Resolution 7
ENGROSSED RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Betty Franklin-Hammonds.
Whereas, Betty Franklin-Hammonds was born on December 23, 1942, in Tampa, Florida, and died unexpectedly on April 28, 1999, in Madison; and
Whereas, Ms. Franklin-Hammonds began her undergraduate college career at Dillard University in New Orleans, received her bachelor's degree from Florida A & M and her master's degree in Sociology from Florida State University; and
Whereas, Ms. Franklin-Hammonds served in various leadership positions for the NAACP-Madison branch, including president, treasurer, secretary and education committee chair; and
Whereas, Ms. Franklin-Hammonds served the greater Madison community on the Police Advisory Committee, on Madison Metropolitan School District committees, on the board of the National Association of Social Workers, on the board for the United Way of Dane County, as secretary of the Dane County Parent Council, and as cofounder of the King Coalition; and
Whereas, Ms. Franklin-Hammonds, from 1984-1992, served as the executive director and later as president and CEO of the Madison Urban League; and
Whereas, Ms. Franklin-Hammonds, as editor-in-chief and publisher of The Madison Times Weekly Newspaper since 1991, elevated that paper to national prominence as a newspaper serving minority populations; and
Whereas, Ms. Franklin-Hammonds tirelessly advocated for quality education for all children and particularly for children of color; and
Whereas, Ms. Franklin-Hammonds was respected and admired by countless friends, coworkers and acquaintances and by persons who knew her only by her good works; and
Whereas, Ms. Franklin-Hammonds will be remembered not only as a powerful, soft-spoken civil rights activist, but also as a mother, wife, sister, humanitarian, and an inspiration to all who knew her; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the assembly of the state of Wisconsin honor and commend Betty Franklin-Hammonds's years of dedicated public service and extend their condolences to her family and friends; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this resolution to the family members of Betty Franklin-Hammonds.
