2001 Senate Joint Resolution 28
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Gerald D. Lorge.
Whereas, Gerald D. Lorge was born on July 9, 1922, in Bear Creek, Wisconsin, and died on February 14, 2001; and
Whereas, he graduated from St. Mary's Grade School and Bear Creek High School, entered Marquette University in 1946, majoring in courses preparatory to law school, and earned a law degree from the Marquette University Law School in 1952; and
Whereas, Gerald Lorge served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific from January 1942 to December 1945; and
Whereas, on April 15, 1958, he was united in marriage to Christina C. Ziegler; and
Whereas, Gerald Lorge received his first taste of an elected office with a stint in the Wisconsin assembly from 1951 to 1954; and
Whereas, Gerald Lorge was elected to the Wisconsin senate in a special election in 1954 to fill an unexpired term upon the resignation of Senator Gordon A. Bubolz and served until his retirement in 1984 as the 5th longest serving senator in the state's history; and
Whereas, he was a member of many legislative committees including Legislative Council, Joint Committee on Finance, Joint Survey Committee on Retirement Systems, and Joint Audit Committee and chaired the Senate Committee on Judiciary; and
Whereas, during his tenure in the legislature, Gerald Lorge was involved with legislation that created the University of Wisconsin campuses in Green Bay and Kenosha; and
Whereas, at the conclusion of his tenure in the legislature, Senator Lorge was the most senior member of the Wisconsin legislature and the 1983 session was his 17th consecutive session; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Gerald D. Lorge contributed to this state, express their sorrow at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Mr. Lorge's wife, Christina; his 3 daughters, Anna Morgan, Julie Lorge, and Christina Lorge; his 2 sons, Robert Lorge and William Lorge; and his brother, Kenneth Lorge.
