2003 Senate Joint Resolution 37
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Walter L. Merten.
Whereas, Walter L. Merten was born on December 11, 1922, and died on November 8, 2001, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and
Whereas, he graduated from Marquette University High School; and
Whereas, he earned a B.A. degree from Marquette University and an LL.B degree in 1950; and
Whereas, Mr. Merten married Grace M. Stieber; and
Whereas, he served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946 in the Philippines and Japan; and
Whereas, after his discharge from military service, at the request of the War Department, Mr. Merten served as a civilian military officer in Japan, as a specialist in government and education; and
Whereas, Mr. Merten was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1950 (Milwaukee, 19th), serving in the 1951 and 1953 sessions; and
Whereas, he was subsequently elected to the Wisconsin senate in 1954 (5th Senate District), serving in the 1955 and 1957 sessions; and
Whereas, during his tenure in the legislature, Mr. Merten was the assistant majority floor leader during the 1957 session; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Walter L. Merten contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Mr. Merten's wife, Grace M. Merten, and to his sister, Florence Fridal.
