2005 Senate Joint Resolution 20
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: declaring the week of April 11 to 15 UW Spirit Week.
Whereas, the University of Wisconsin (UW) System is one of the world's exceptional public university systems, serving nearly 161,000 students through its 26 campuses while touching hundreds of thousands more through its statewide extension service; and
Whereas, the UW System is an important contributor to the cultural identity and education of the state, providing these services since statehood in 1848, advancing our citizens' lives through its mission of education, research, and community outreach; and
Whereas, the work of the UW System helps cure disease, sustain the environment, spur the economy, enhance the arts, and touch the lives of nearly every state citizen through outreach education, hospitals and clinics, public broadcasting, business services, athletic events, and service-learning programs; and
Whereas, the UW System is a vital economic engine, generating $9.5 billion and more than 28,000 graduates for Wisconsin's economy each year; and
Whereas, more than half a million UW alumni are Wisconsin citizens, contributing to public and private enterprise and the sustainability of every community in the state; and
Whereas, hundreds of thousands more UW alumni live and work throughout the world, enhancing global understanding and improving the quality of life internationally; and
Whereas, UW alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, and friends in every Wisconsin community are proud of their strong ties to their local campus and take great pride in the accomplishments of the entire UW System; and
Whereas, UW campuses and Wisconsin citizens across the state will join in UW Spirit Day on Friday, April 15, to celebrate the contributions of UW alumni, the vitality of the UW System, and the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the week of April 11 to 15 is hereby declared UW Spirit Week.
