ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and service of Milton McPike.
Whereas, Milton McPike was born on October 9, 1939, in Jacksonville, Illinois, and died on March 28, 2008; and
Whereas, Milton McPike graduated from Northeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a Master of Science degree in physical education; and
Whereas, Milton McPike was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in 1961 and then went on to become the assistant principal at Madison's West High School in 1974, where he served until 1979, when he became principal of East High School; and
Whereas, Milton McPike received the district's Distinguished Service Award in 1988, leading to his recognition as one of the top 10 American Heroes in Education by Reader's Digest; and
Whereas, Milton McPike was named Wisconsin's "Principal of the Year" in 1997; and
Whereas, Milton McPike was named "Educator of the Year" in 1998 by the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce; and
Whereas, Milton McPike was presented with the city of Madison MLK Humanitarian award in 2007; and
Whereas, Milton McPike retired as principal in June 2002 and was appointed to the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System in June 2004, resigning in 2008 due to health concerns; and
Whereas, Milton McPike left a lasting impression on all of the students he encountered with his eagerness to connect on an individual level and through his constant vigilance towards improving the quality of their education; and
Whereas, Milton McPike is survived by his wife, Sharon, and 6 children; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Milton McPike and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Milton McPike's wife, Sharon.
