2007 Senate Joint Resolution 53
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the 75th Anniversary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.
Whereas, courageous men and women have served our country in military conflicts over the years, and many have sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we all enjoy; and
Whereas, over 1,000,000 men and women have been severely injured in the course of conflict with an enemy force, or while held by an enemy force as a prisoner of war, or killed in the course of action, thus receiving the Purple Heart for Military Merit; and
Whereas, the Purple Heart was established on August 7, 1782, in Newburgh, New York, during the Revolutionary War, when General George Washington issued an order establishing the Decoration of the Purple Heart; and
Whereas, the Military Order of the Purple Heart was founded in 1932 to protect and promote the mutual interests of Purple Heart recipients; and
Whereas, there are over 1,535,000 recipients of the Purple Heart Medal, approximately 550,000 of whom are still living; and
Whereas, the Military Order of the Purple Heart has sustained and encouraged support for Purple Heart recipients in Wisconsin and nationwide, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart is the only veterans service organization comprised strictly of wounded combat veterans; and
Whereas, the tremendous dedication and sacrifice on the part of these veterans is recognized and emphasized by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the organization has worked tirelessly to ensure due support for these veterans; and
Whereas, August 7, 2007, will be the 225th anniversary of the original proclamation of the Decoration of the Purple Heart as well as the 75th anniversary of the Military Order of the Purple Heart; and
Whereas, on August 7, 2007, the state of Wisconsin will recognize Purple Heart Day and will commend all recipients of the Purple Heart and members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart for their demonstration of heroism on behalf of Wisconsin; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature congratulate the Military Order of the Purple Heart on its 75th anniversary and are indebted to Purple Heart recipients for their efforts for our country.
