2009 Assembly Joint Resolution 34
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of James A. McCann.
Whereas, James A. McCann was born on March 7, 1924, in Freedom, Wisconsin, and died on February 20, 2009; and
Whereas, Mr. McCann earned a B.B.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin‐Madison in 1959; and
Whereas, Mr. McCann served in World War II and the Korean Conflict; and
Whereas, Mr. McCann married Shirley McCann, to whom he was married for 54 years; and
Whereas, Mr. McCann was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1964, representing Milwaukee's 15th district, serving in the 1965 and 1967 sessions; and
Whereas, after leaving the legislature, he was elected to the Milwaukee Common Council in 1968 and to the city comptroller's post in 1972; and
Whereas, during his tenure as city comptroller, he served on the Milwaukee Pension Board until 1997; and
Whereas, as a certified public accountant, Mr. McCann was active in the Wisconsin Government Finance Officers Association; and
Whereas, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Wisconsin Government Finance Officers Association sent him to provide financial expertise to newly emerging democracies in Eastern Europe; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that James A. McCann contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Mr. McCann's wife, Shirley; son, Brian McCann; and daughters, Shari Brand and Maureen Wahhab.
