ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming the Wisconsin Centennial of Flight.
Whereas, on November 4, 1909, Arthur P. Warner made the first controlled flight of an airplane in Wisconsin, flying his Curtiss airplane in Beloit, Wisconsin; and
Whereas, Arthur P. Warner was the first individual American to purchase an airplane and the eleventh American to pilot an airplane; and
Whereas, November 4, 2009, marks Wisconsin's Centennial of Flight; and
Whereas, aviation has played a vital role in Wisconsin's history both in peace and wartime with prominent leaders including World War I Air Corps Commander General Billy Mitchell, Air Racing Champion Steve Wittman, World War II Ace of Aces Major Richard I. Bong, Experimental Aircraft Association founder Paul Poberezny plus many others; and
Whereas, the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame, as the premier Wisconsin aviation historical organization, has the mission to collect, preserve, and share the history of aviation in Wisconsin and to honor Wisconsin's aviation heroes, is organizing a statewide commemoration of Wisconsin's Centennial of Flight by publicizing the event in the state's media, helping local aviation, historical, and educational organizations to participate in the event, creating and displaying around the state a special historical exhibit on Warner's flight, and sponsoring the construction of a quarter-scale model of Warner's airplane to accompany the exhibit; and
Whereas, the Wisconsin Aviation Hall of Fame is sponsoring, along with organizations in the Beloit area, including EAA Chapter 60, the Beloit Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Beloit Historical Society, and the Beloit Area School District, numerous commemorative and educational events in the Beloit area during the first week of November 2009, including the rededication of the A.P. Warner historical marker, a reenactment of Warner's flight, a special exhibit at the Beloit Historical Society, a lecture by a distinguished aviation scholar, and programs in the local schools, now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature proclaims the month of November 2009, Centennial of Flight Month in the state of Wisconsin, and encourages all citizens of this state to participate in Centennial of Flight celebrations.
