2011 Assembly Joint Resolution 130
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming March 2012 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
Whereas, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States; and
Whereas, the risk of developing colorectal cancer increases with advancing age, with more than 90 percent of cases occurring in people aged 50 or older; and
Whereas, colorectal cancer screening saves lives; and
Whereas, it is estimated that as many as 60 percent of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented if all men and women aged 50 years or older were screened routinely; and
Whereas, colorectal screening tests also can diagnose early colorectal cancer and polyps; and
Whereas, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for colorectal cancer for all people until they reach 75 years old and for some people when they are older than 75; and
Whereas, the following screening tests are recommended by the USPSTF and the American Cancer Society: a colonoscopy once every ten years, a virtual colonoscopy once every five years, a high-sensitivity fecal occult blood test annually, and a flexible sigmoidoscopy once every five years; and
Whereas, the good health and well-being of the residents of the State of Wisconsin are enhanced as a direct result of increased awareness about colorectal cancer and screening options; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the
assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature proclaims March 2012 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and encourages enhanced awareness of and increased screening for colorectal cancer in Wisconsin.
