2011 Assembly Joint Resolution 22
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Steven J. Hilgenberg.
Whereas, former Representative Steve Hilgenberg was born on November 26, 1944, in Appleton, Wisconsin, and lived in rural Iowa County since 1972, and died on March 27, 2011; and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1966, during which time he was stationed in Germany for three years; and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg, after receiving a diploma in graphic arts and printing from Madison Area Technical College in 1973, thereafter served the community for 27 years as owner of Inkwell Printers; and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg served on the Dodgeville School Board for seven years and was a community representative for the Head Start Policy Council for three years; and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg served as a Democratic state representative for the 51st Assembly District from 2006-2010. As a state representative, he served as chair of the Assembly Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs (2009-2010), vice-chair of the Assembly Committee on Renewable Energy and Rural Affairs (2009-2010), and served as a member of the Assembly Committees on Insurance (2007-2008), Rural Economic Development (2007-2008), Small Business (2007-2008), Education (2009-2010), and Tourism, Recreation, and State Properties (2009-2010); and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg promoted impartial justice by championing legislation that created public financing for supreme court elections in 2009; and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg strongly supported renewable energy and rural economic development by promoting renewable energy investment on farms and in rural communities; and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg demonstrated true leadership and dedication to veterans by improving access to education, employment, and health care opportunities as the chair of the Assembly Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs; and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg was a staunch advocate for the advancement of our public schools and greater equitability in Wisconsin's school funding, so that each and every child would receive an exceptional educational experience; and
Whereas, Steve Hilgenberg was husband to Mary Mayo, father to Molly Herr and her husband, Mark, and grandfather to Evan and Carson Herr; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the
assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin state legislature hereby commend the exemplary life of Steven Hilgenberg, express their sorrow at his death, and extend sincere condolences to family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this resolution to Steve Hilgenberg's widow, Mary Mayo, and his daughter, Molly Herr.
