2013 Assembly Joint Resolution 94
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commending and congratulating Chancellor Charles W. Sorensen for his contributions to the University of Wisconsin-Stout and the state of Wisconsin.
Whereas, on August 15, 2014, Charles W. Sorensen will retire as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Stout; and
Whereas, Chancellor Sorensen has served the faculty, staff, and students of UW-Stout, as well as the citizens of this state, with distinction as chancellor for twenty-six years, the longest tenure of any UW-Stout leader; and
Whereas, during Chancellor Sorensen's tenure UW-Stout has increased enrollment by 31 percent, to more than nine thousand students; and
Whereas, under Chancellor Sorensen's guidance the number of undergraduate majors offered has risen from twenty to forty-four, while the number of graduate majors rose from eighteen to twenty-three and three advanced graduate programs were added; and
Whereas, due to Chancellor Sorensen's distinguished and innovative leadership, UW-Stout won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 2001, becoming the first institution of higher education to receive the award, and in 2007 UW-Stout was designated as Wisconsin's polytechnic university; and
Whereas, Chancellor Sorensen has overseen numerous extensive renovations and additions to the UW-Stout campus, including Harvey Hall Theatre, Jarvis Hall Science Wing, Memorial Student Center, Millennium Hall, and the Don and Nona Williams Stadium; and
Whereas, under Chancellor Sorensen's leadership, UW-Stout opened the Stout Technology and Business Park, the Discovery Center, and the Center for Applied Ethics and expanded the Cooperative Education Program; and
Whereas, the eStout laptop program, which provides laptop computers to all undergraduates on campus and serves as the foundation for a campus-wide digital learning environment, was implemented under Chancellor Sorensen's administration in 2002; and
Whereas, UW-Stout has maintained an employment rate for new graduates at or above 97 percent throughout Chancellor Sorensen's tenure; and
Whereas, under Chancellor Sorensen's management, the assets of the Stout University Foundation have grown from $2.3 million to more than $43 million; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature commends and congratulates Chancellor Charles W. Sorensen for his contributions to the University of Wisconsin-Stout and to the state of Wisconsin and wishes him a long and healthy retirement; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to Chancellor Sorensen.
