2013 Senate Joint Resolution 13
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and military service of United States Army Staff Sergeant Joseph James Altmann.
Whereas, Joseph was born on December 15, 1984, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, to John and Janice Altmann and died on December 25, 2011, of injuries sustained when an insurgent attacked his unit in Kunar Province, Afghanistan; and
Whereas, Joseph was a 2003 graduate of Columbus Catholic High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Marshfield/Wood County and the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County; and
Whereas, Joseph entered the United States Army and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, graduating in July 2005; and
Whereas, Joseph further trained as a combat medic at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, graduating in November 2005; and
Whereas, Joseph was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Armored Division, Giessen, Germany, and served his first tour of duty in Iraq from 2006 to 2007; and
Whereas, Joseph was assigned to Walter Reed Hospital as a medic and later assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; and
Whereas, Joseph was awarded the Expert Field Medic Badge in October 2010 after further training and the completion of a multi-day testing course; of the 160 participants that started, only 12 completed the course and were awarded the badge; and
Whereas, Joseph served his second tour of duty in Iraq in 2009 and started his third tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2011; and
Whereas, Joseph married Nikki Lee Nichols on February 15, 2011, in Honolulu, Hawaii; and
Whereas, Joseph embodied the Army's core values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal service and will be remembered for his quiet demeanor and unwavering friendship; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Joseph James Altmann and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint resolution to Joseph's parents, John and Janice Altmann, and his wife, Nikki.
