2013 Senate Joint Resolution 18
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: declaring May 2013 Youth Traffic Safety Month.
Whereas, the month of May is National Youth Traffic Safety Month; and
Whereas, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death of young people in Wisconsin; and
Whereas, teenagers are over-represented in traffic crashes; while teenagers account for only 6 percent of licensed drivers in this state, they are involved in 16 percent of all car crashes; and
Whereas, car accidents involving teenagers are often the result of distraction, inexperience, and risky behaviors such as tailgating, speeding, underestimating the danger of driver distractions, driving at night, and not buckling up; and
Whereas, the month of May is an important time for teenagers to focus on driving safely as prom, graduation, and summer trip season greatly increase the potential for traffic-related deaths and injuries involving young drivers; and
Whereas, the youth of this state are a vital asset we cannot afford to lose to traffic accidents; and
Whereas, safety awareness campaigns that emphasize consequences are a proven strategy to help young drivers develop safe driving attitudes and prevent traffic accidents; and
Whereas, Wisconsin citizens, including parents, educators, law enforcement, elected leaders, community leaders, and youth themselves, must play a part in protecting and educating this state's youth and their families about youth traffic safety; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature proclaim May 2013 as Youth Traffic Safety Month in Wisconsin and commend this observance to all residents.
