2013 Senate Joint Resolution 32
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commending His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama upon his visit to Wisconsin on May 14 and 15, 2013.
Whereas, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibet; and
Whereas, His Holiness was a political leader for his people from 1950 to 2011; and
Whereas, since the time of his forced exile in 1959 from Tibet to India, he has devoted himself to the plight of his people and to promoting world peace, winning the respect and affection of world leaders and millions of people throughout the world; and
Whereas, His Holiness has made great and immeasurable contributions to democratization and peacebuilding in Tibet, including establishing the Charter of Tibetans in Exile and the Five Point Peace Plan for Tibet; and
Whereas, His Holiness speaks of compassion, love, and respect for our fellow man; in His Holiness's words, "When we feel love and kindness toward others, it not only makes others feel loved and cared for, but it helps us also to develop inner happiness and peace."
Whereas, His Holiness has been recognized worldwide as a man of peace, being awarded the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts for a peaceful resolution in Tibet, and over 84 other honors including awards, honorary doctorates, and prizes; and
Whereas, His Holiness has traveled far and wide to share his message of peace, including visits to more than 62 countries spanning six continents; and
Whereas, His Holiness has visited Wisconsin nine times: in 1989, days after he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize; in 1981, when he performed the Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) Initiation for the first time in the West; in 1979, when Wisconsin was part of His Holiness's historic first visit to North America; in 1998, to offer teachings as requested by the Deer Park Buddhist Center, to address the official session of the Wisconsin Assembly, and to meet with the members of the Wisconsin Tibetan Association and to recognize their civic contributions; and most recently in 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2010; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature hereby honors His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama upon his visit to Wisconsin on May 14 and 15, 2013.
