ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: recognizing The American Legion's ongoing commitment to service to veterans, families, the nation, the state, and their communities and commending the Legion on the occasion of its century of service.
Whereas, The American Legion began with a meeting of World War I veterans held in Paris, France, in the spring of 1919; and
Whereas, The American Legion was chartered by Congress on September 16, 1919, and continues to be the largest veterans service organization in the nation with over 1,800,000 members. The American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, has over 50,000 members and over 500 local posts; and
Whereas, The American Legion is responsible for the original GI Bill and has a proud history of fighting for legislation to improve the lives of our nation's veterans; and
Whereas, The American Legion provides programming to the youth of our nation. American Legion Baseball is a local and national program that develops the teamwork and leadership skills of youth; and
Whereas, Boys State and Nation provides students with an educational opportunity to experience how state government and national government work. The oratorical program helps students develop public speaking skills while they study the United States Constitution; and
Whereas, The American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, provides several thousand dollars in scholarships each year to the youth of Wisconsin; and
Whereas, the Department Service Office assists veterans in receiving the benefits they earned for the sacrifices they made; and
Whereas, The American Legion, Department of Wisconsin, operates Camp American Legion, which provides the northwoods experience to enable veterans to heal and provide a place of rest; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature, in recognition of The American Legion's ongoing commitment to community, state, and nation by supporting veterans and their families, does hereby commend the organization upon the 100th anniversary of its founding.
