2019 Assembly Joint Resolution 59
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6, 2019.
Whereas, over 160,000 American, British, and Canadian troops landed across 50 miles of Normandy beaches in the early hours of June 6, 1944; and
Whereas, Wisconsinites joined their fellow Americans and Allied troops to brave bullets and shellfire as they waded ashore through freezing water or parachuted from planes to land behind enemy lines; and
Whereas, D-Day, codenamed “Operation Neptune,” constituted the largest amphibious attack in history, and became a major turning point of World War II in Europe; and
Whereas, the “Great Crusade,” as General Dwight D. Eisenhower called it, claimed the lives of 10,000 Allied men on June 6 alone, including over 6,000 Americans; and
Whereas, the Battle of Normandy, codenamed “Operation Overlord,” concluded in late August 1944 when Allied forces liberated France and forced a Nazi retreat; and
Whereas, around 8,000 World War II veterans live in Wisconsin today; and
Whereas, these veterans' experiences must be preserved and shared in order to remember and honor their sacrifices for the sake of our country; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin Legislature hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day and honor those fallen, as well as those who survived to share their stories.
