AJR88,1,32 Whereas, in 1846 the U.S. government gave permission to the Territory of
3Wisconsin to take the steps necessary to transform itself into a state; and
AJR88,1,54 Whereas, one of those steps was drafting a constitution that the voters would
5ratify and the U.S. Congress would approve; and
AJR88,1,76 Whereas, in 1846 a convention drafted a constitution, but the territory's voters
7failed to ratify it; and
AJR88,1,98 Whereas, a 2nd constitutional convention met from December 15, 1847, until
9February 1, 1848, and drafted a 2nd constitution; and
AJR88,1,1110 Whereas, the territory's voters, on March 13, 1848, ratified that constitution
1116,759 to 6,384; and
AJR88,1,1312 Whereas, on May 29, 1848, President Polk signed a bill that admitted
13Wisconsin to the union; and
AJR88,1,1514 Whereas, on June 5, 1848, the first state legislature convened; now, therefore,

1Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
2legislature of the state of Wisconsin recognize that 1998 marks the 150th year of
3Wisconsin's statehood and, meeting early in that year in Belmont, Wisconsin's first
4capital, they urge all of the people of this state to celebrate this significant
5anniversary, to take pride in the Wisconsinites who have made Wisconsin great, to
6reflect on things that they can do to make this an even greater state and to participate
7in, and enjoy, as many of the sesquicentennial events as possible; and, be it further
AJR88,2,9 8Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
9resolution to the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Commission.
