AR26,1,1 1Relating to: welcoming and honoring the Dalai Lama.
AR26,1,32 Whereas, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual
3and temporal leader of the Tibetan people; and
AR26,1,74 Whereas, since the time of his forced exile in 1959 from Tibet to India, he has
5devoted himself to the plight of his people and to promoting world peace, winning the
6respect and affection of world leaders and millions of people throughout the world;
7and
AR26,1,98 Whereas, his refusal to use violence in Tibet's struggle for freedom won him the
9Nobel Peace Prize in 1989; and
AR26,1,1110 Whereas, in recent years, His Holiness has traveled extensively, sharing his
11consistent philosophy of peace based on compassion and personal responsibility; and
AR26,2,212 Whereas, His Holiness has visited Wisconsin 3 times in the past; his last visit
13in 1989, days after he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize; in 1981 when he
14performed the Kalachakra (Wheel of Time) Initiation for the first time in the West;

1and in 1979 when Wisconsin was part of His Holiness' historic first visit to North
2America; and
AR26,2,63 Whereas, His Holiness will make his 4th visit to Wisconsin on May 13 to 15,
41998, to offer teachings as requested by the Deer Park Buddhist Center, to address
5the official session of the Wisconsin assembly, and to meet with the members of the
6Wisconsin Tibetan Association and to recognize their civic contributions; and
AR26,2,117 Whereas, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, offers these thoughts:
8"My message is the practice of compassion, love and kindness. Compassion can be put
9into practice if one recognizes the fact that every human being is a member of
10humanity and the human family regardless of differences in religion, culture, color
11and creed. Deep down there is no difference."

AR26,2,16 12Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin assembly, on
13behalf of the state of Wisconsin, welcome and honor the visit of His Holiness, the 14th
14Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, on the occasion of his first visit to our State Capitol, and
15thank him for his gracious and wise words given for the benefit of all those fortunate
16to be present in the assembly chambers on this auspicious day, the 13th of May, 1998.
