AJR118,1,32 Whereas, John R. Devitt was born in Milwaukee on August 13, 1917, and died
3in Milwaukee on January 31, 2000; and
AJR118,1,54 Whereas, John R. Devitt graduated from Holy Rosary Grade School, Marquette
5University High School, Marquette University and Marquette Law School; and
AJR118,1,66 Whereas, he began practicing law in Milwaukee in 1941; and
AJR118,1,87 Whereas, he was elected to serve in the 1945 Wisconsin assembly, where he was
8a member of the Judiciary Committee; and
AJR118,1,109 Whereas, as a member of the assembly, he demonstrated a particular interest
10in issues surrounding the organization of local government; and
AJR118,1,1211 Whereas, immediately after the assembly adjourned in June 1945, he departed
12for army training; and
AJR118,1,1413 Whereas, he received a special leave from the army to return to Wisconsin for
14the July 1946 special session of the legislature; and

1Whereas, in 1955, John Devitt was appointed to the county legal office,
2beginning many years of valuable service to Milwaukee County; and
AJR118,2,43 Whereas, his life was marked by continued devotion to his church, his party and
4his late wife, Elizabeth; now, therefore, be it
AJR118,2,7 5Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
6Wisconsin legislature salute the life and public service of John R. Devitt and mourn
7his passing; and, be it further
AJR118,2,9 8Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
9resolution to John's son, Neal.
