2distributing to farmers $200 million in aid.
AJR36,1,53 Whereas, Wisconsin's agricultural heritage is based on family farms, and in
4honor of the hard work and contributions made to our economy by Wisconsin dairy
5farm families we proudly refer to our state as "America's Dairyland"; and
AJR36,1,76 Whereas, Wisconsin's dairy industry impacts over 133,000 workers throughout
7the state, with a gross economic impact of over $4.9 billion to our state's economy; and
AJR36,1,108 Whereas, the monthly fluctuations and unpredictability of the market have
9made it difficult for family dairy farms to remain viable businesses, and in 1998 alone
10Wisconsin lost 1,200 dairy farms; and
AJR36,1,1311 Whereas, recently farmers enjoyed higher prices for their products; however,
12during the past month dairy prices have fallen sharply by $6 per hundred weight,
13which has again increased financial pressures on our dairy farmers; and

1Whereas, the Dairy Income Loss Assistance Program will provide some help to
2dairy farmers, with assistance calculated on not more than production of 150 head
3of cattle per farm operation; now, therefore, be it
AJR36,2,9 4Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
5legislature urges U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Daniel Glickman to act quickly in
6distributing to farmers $200 million in aid through the Dairy Income Loss Assistance
7Program, fully utilize his authority to hasten and increase purchases of dairy
8products for federal nutrition programs, and use his full authority to increase dairy
9exports under the Dairy Export Incentive Program; and, be it further
AJR36,2,12 10Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall send copies of this joint
11resolution to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Glickman and to each member of the
12congressional delegation from this state.
