AJR47,1,53 Whereas, on June 8, 1967, the U.S.S. Liberty, while operating in international
4waters in the eastern Mediterranean, was the target of an attack by Israel's war
5planes and torpedo boats; and
AJR47,1,86 Whereas, this attack killed 34 members of the Liberty's crew and wounded 171
7other United States personnel on board, in addition to causing extensive damage to
8the ship; and
AJR47,1,119 Whereas, the late George Ball, undersecretary of state in the Kennedy and
10Johnson administrations, referred to these deaths as the "blatant murder of
11American citizens"; and
AJR47,1,1312 Whereas, accountability for these blatant murders of American citizens has
13never been established; and

1Whereas, aircraft dispatched from aircraft carriers to aid the Liberty were
2recalled, in violation of United States military law, resulting in 25 of the 34 blatant
3murders; and
AJR47,2,54 Whereas, the U.S.S. Liberty's disaster is the only naval disaster that has never
5been investigated by Congress; now, therefore, be it
AJR47,2,10 6Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
7legislature calls upon Congress to immediately investigate the "blatant murders of
8American citizens" that were perpetrated by the armed forces of the State of Israel
9on June 8, 1967, in order to determine culpability for those murders; and, be it
10further
AJR47,2,13 11Resolved, That the Wisconsin legislature urges Congress to determine why
12aircraft dispatched to aid the Liberty were recalled in direct violation of U.S. military
13law and custom; and, be it further
AJR47,2,15 14Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
15resolution to each member of this state's congressional delegation.
