AJR79,1,32 Whereas, Robert O. Uehling was born on April 23, 1915, in Wisconsin Rapids,
3Wisconsin, and died on November 29, 2001, in Madison, Wisconsin; and
AJR79,1,64 Whereas, Mr. Uehling graduated from Wisconsin Rapids High School, attended
5Santa Monica Junior College, and earned both his B.A. degree in 1939 and LL.B.
6degree in 1941 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and
AJR79,1,97 Whereas, Mr. Uehling served his country with the U.S. Army during World War
8II as a forward observer with the 45th Infantry Division artillery in North Africa,
9Anzio, Italy, and southern France; and
AJR79,1,1110 Whereas, he was awarded the Bronze Star for "Heroism in Ground Combat
11while near Fremifontaine, France, in October 1944"; and
AJR79,1,1412 Whereas, prior to going overseas during World War II, Mr. Uehling married
13Dorothy Knauss, who preceded him in death in 1986 after they celebrated 43 years
14of togetherness; and

1Whereas, Mr. Uehling also served from 1952 to 1957 as an administrative
2officer of the state Selective Service System, and retired as a colonel from the
3Wisconsin National Guard; and
AJR79,2,54 Whereas, he received his first taste of an elected office with a stint on the
5Madison city council from 1959 to 1961; and
AJR79,2,76 Whereas, Mr. Uehling was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1960, and
7served continuously from the 1961 through the 1969 sessions; and
AJR79,2,108 Whereas, after his tenure in the assembly, Mr. Uehling was appointed chief
9clerk of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, by the court, in 1973, and served in that
10position from September 1, 1973, to January 1978; and
AJR79,2,1211 Whereas, Mr. Uehling married Eleanor Jane Crawford in 1987; and, be it

AJR79,2,16 13Resolved by the assembly assembly senate concurring, That the members
14of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Robert O.
15Uehling contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his
16death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
AJR79,2,22 17Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
18resolution to Mr. Uehling's wife, Eleanor Jane Crawford Uehling; to his two sons,
19Robert H. Uehling of Capitola, California, and Richard A. Uehling of Sausalito,
20California; and to his five stepchildren, Eleanor C. Blitzer of Florida, Katharine C.
21Robey of Georgia, Melissa C. Kotas of Wisconsin, John Crawford of New York, and
22Helen C. McDermott of California.
