2001 Assembly RESOLUTION 7

AR7,1,2 Relating to: calling upon the U.S. Congress to investigate the attack on the U.S.S. Liberty.

AR7,1,5 Whereas, on June 8, 1967, the U.S.S. Liberty, while operating in international waters in the eastern Mediterranean, was the target of an attack by Israel's war planes and torpedo boats; and

AR7,1,8 Whereas, this attack killed 34 members of the U.S.S. Liberty's crew and wounded 171 other United States personnel on board, in addition to causing extensive damage to the ship; and

AR7,1,11 Whereas, there continues to be controversy surrounding the attack with sailors who believe the attack was deliberate and by others who believe the attack was a mistake by the Israeli military; and

AR7,1,14 Whereas, aircraft dispatched from aircraft carriers to aid the U.S.S. Liberty were recalled, in violation of U.S. military law, resulting in 25 of the 34 deaths of American servicemen; and

AR7,2,2 Whereas, the sailors and their families should have closure of this tragic attack and its aftermath; and

AR7,2,4 Whereas, the U.S.S. Liberty's disaster is the only naval disaster that has never been fully investigated by Congress; now, therefore, be it

AR7,2,8 Resolved by the assembly, That the Wisconsin assembly calls upon Congress to immediately investigate the attack on the U.S.S. Liberty that was perpetrated by the armed forces of the state of Israel on June 8, 1967, in order to determine the truth behind the attack; and, be it further

AR7,2,11 Resolved, That the Wisconsin assembly urges Congress to determine why aircraft dispatched to aid the U.S.S. Liberty were recalled in direct violation of U.S. military law and custom; and, be it further

AR7,2,15 Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to the president and secretary of the U.S. senate, to the speaker and clerk of the U.S. house of representatives, and to each member of this state's congressional delegation.
