AJR2,1,32 Whereas, Patricia Spafford Smith was born on August 17, 1925, in Shell Lake,
3Wisconsin, and died on December 31, 2002; and
AJR2,1,44 Whereas, Mrs. Smith graduated from Shell Lake High School; and
AJR2,1,65 Whereas, she attended Superior State Teachers College (now University of
6Wisconsin-Superior); and
AJR2,1,87 Whereas, Mrs. Smith received a B.B.A. from the University of Minnesota in
81946; and
AJR2,1,109 Whereas, after graduation, she was employed as an accountant by the
10Wisconsin Department of Revenue; and
AJR2,1,1211 Whereas, she married James W. Smith on October 22, 1949, who preceded her
12in death in 1969; and
AJR2,1,1413 Whereas, Mrs. Smith was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1978, and
14served in the 1979 through 1983 sessions; and

1Whereas, during her tenure in the assembly, she served as the majority caucus
2sergeant at arms during the 1983 session; and
AJR2,2,53 Whereas, Mrs. Smith also served as chairperson and vice-chairperson of the
4Assembly Committee on Tourism and Recreation, and co-chairperson of the Joint
5Committee on Tax Exemptions; and
AJR2,2,86 Whereas, upon her retirement from the legislature, she served on the
7Washburn County Board and the Shell Lake City Council and as Mayor of Shell
8Lake; now, therefore, be it
AJR2,2,12 9Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
10Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Patricia Spafford
11Smith contributed to this state and her community, express their sorrow at her
12death, and extend their condolences to her family and friends; and, be it further
AJR2,2,17 13Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
14resolution to Mrs. Smith's daughter, Margaret Mary of Seattle, Washington; her
15sons, Bill, John, and Stephen of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Patrick of Appleton,
16Wisconsin, and Michael of Seattle, Washington; and her sister, Helen Kay Omernik
17of Montrose, Colorado.
