AB589,1,3 An Act to amend 118.07 (title); and to create 118.07 (3) of the statutes; relating to: providing information about meningococcal disease to parents of pupils in grades 6 to 12.

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau

This bill directs the Department of Public Instruction to distribute to school districts, private schools, and charter schools information about meningococcal disease, including the causes and symptoms of the disease, how it is spread, and how to obtain additional information about the disease and the availability, effectiveness, and risks of vaccinations against the disease. Annually, each school board and each private school and charter school must provide the information to the parents and guardians of pupils enrolled in grades 6 to 12 in the school district or school.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

AB589, s. 1 Section 1. 118.07 (title) of the statutes is amended to read:

AB589,1,5 118.07 (title) Safety Health and safety requirements.

AB589, s. 2 Section 2. 118.07 (3) of the statutes is created to read:

AB589,2,9 118.07 (3) The department shall make available to school districts, private schools, and charter schools information about meningococcal disease, including the causes and symptoms of the disease, how it is spread, and how to obtain additional information about the disease and the availability, effectiveness, and risks of vaccinations against the disease. The department may do so by posting the information on its Internet site. At the beginning of every school year, each school board and the governing body of each private school and each charter school shall provide the parents and guardians of pupils enrolled in grades 6 to 12 in the school district or school with the information.

AB589, s. 3 Section 3. Initial applicability.

AB589,2,12 (1) This act first applies to the first school year beginning after the effective date of this subsection.
