SJR24,1,1 Relating to: the life and public service of Ruth Chickering Clusen.

SJR24,1,4 Whereas, Ruth Chickering Clusen was born in 1922 in the town of Bruce in Rusk County, graduated from high school in Eau Claire at age 15, and became a teacher 3 years later; and

SJR24,1,7 Whereas, Ruth Chickering married Donald Clusen in 1945 and settled in the Green Bay area in 1946; Donald became a teacher at the state reformatory, retiring as warden with the Green Bay Correctional Institution; and

SJR24,1,10 Whereas, Ms. Clusen joined the local League of Women Voters in Green Bay, serving as environmental chairman for 8 years and going on to serve as its national president from 1974 to 1978; and

SJR24,1,13 Whereas, in 1976, Ms. Clusen helped arrange the first League of Women Voters-sponsored presidential debates between candidates, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, and served as moderator; and

SJR24,2,3 Whereas, Ms. Clusen was recruited by President Jimmy Carter to serve as assistant secretary of energy for the environment in the U.S. Department of Energy from 1978-1981; and

SJR24,2,11 Whereas, Ms. Clusen was named to the U.S. delegation to the first United Nations Conference on Women in 1975 in Mexico City, was named Woman of the Year in politics and government by the Ladies Home Journal in 1977, was named International Conservationist of the Year by the National Wildlife Federation in 1978, traveled extensively in Europe and Asia as a U.S. State Department representative speaking on the role of women in American politics, served on the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin from 1983 to 1992, and was a candidate to represent the 8th Congressional District in 1982; now, therefore, be it

SJR24,2,15 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service of Ruth Chickering Clusen, express their sorrow at her death, and extend their condolences to her family and friends; and, be it further

SJR24,2,18 Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Ms. Clusen's husband, Donald; and daughters, Kathryn Clusen and Elizabeth Joannes.
