AJR87,1,32 Whereas, Jane R. Henkel was born on March 21, 1942, in Madison, Wisconsin,
3and died on December 11, 2007, in Madison; and
AJR87,1,64 Whereas, she graduated from Wisconsin High School in Madison and then
5graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1964 with a degree in mathematics;
6and
AJR87,1,97 Whereas, Ms. Henkel was employed as a computer programmer at the National
8Accelerator Lab/Physical Science Lab and then at the University of Wisconsin
9Computing Center; and
AJR87,1,1110 Whereas, she later attended the University of Wisconsin Law School, serving
11on the Wisconsin Law Review and graduating cum laude in 1973; and
AJR87,1,1412 Whereas, Ms. Henkel began work for the Legislative Council Staff in November
131976 and served in the capacities of Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, Deputy
14Director, and Acting Director until her retirement in January 2000; and

1Whereas, many legislators and legislative staff benefited from her perceptive
2analyses of complex issues, including the performance of crucial staff work in helping
3to develop statutes relating to school district boundary changes, open enrollment,
4truancy, public libraries, alcohol beverage laws, educational communications
5technology, and many other subjects; and
AJR87,2,76 Whereas, Ms. Henkel also served as legal counsel to the Joint Committee on
7Employment Relations; and
AJR87,2,118 Whereas, Jane R. Henkel served as a teacher and mentor for many at the
9Legislative Council Staff and served as an excellent example of a hard-working,
10dedicated public servant who provides high quality service to the legislature; now,
11therefore, be it
AJR87,2,15 12Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
13Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Jane R. Henkel
14contributed to this state, express their sorrow at her death, and extend their
15condolences to her family and friends; and be it further
AJR87,2,17 16Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
17resolution to Jane R. Henkel's husband, James Henkel, of Fitchburg, Wisconsin.
