AB417,1,2 1An Act to amend 453.06 (1) of the statutes; relating to: requirements for initial
2licensure as a veterinarian.

Under current law, the Veterinary Examining Board (board) in the Department
of Regulation and Licensing (department) may issue a veterinary license to an
applicant for an initial license who passes an examination conducted by the board,
pays a fee to the department, and is either a graduate of a veterinary college
approved by the board or has successfully completed the Educational Commission
for Foreign Veterinary Graduates certification program of the American Veterinary
Medical Association.
This bill authorizes the board to also issue an initial veterinary license to a
person who passes an examination conducted by the board, pays a fee to the
department, and has successfully completed the Program for the Assessment of
Veterinary Education Equivalence offered by the American Association of Veterinary
State Boards.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB417, s. 1 3Section 1. 453.06 (1) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB417,2,124 453.06 (1) Except as provided under s. 453.072, veterinary licenses shall be
5issued only to persons who successfully pass an examination conducted by the

1examining board and pay the fee specified in s. 440.05 (1). An applicant for an initial
2license shall be a graduate of a veterinary college which that has been approved by
3the examining board or have successfully completed either the educational
4commission for foreign veterinary graduates certification program of the American
5Veterinary Medical Association or the program for the assessment of veterinary
6education equivalence offered by the American Association of Veterinary State
7Boards
. Persons who qualify for examination may be granted temporary permits to
8engage in the practice of veterinary medicine in the employment and under the
9supervision of a veterinarian until the results of the next examination conducted by
10the examining board are available. In case of failure at any examination, the
11applicant shall have the privilege of taking subsequent examinations, upon the
12payment of another fee for each examination.

AB417,2,1514 (1) The treatment of sections 453.06 (1) of the statutes first applies to initial
15veterinary licenses issued on the effective date of this subsection.
