AJR102,1,43 Whereas, congenital heart defects are the most frequently occurring birth
4defect and the leading cause of birth defect related deaths worldwide; and
AJR102,1,65 Whereas, over a million families across America are facing the challenges and
6hardships of raising children with congenital heart defects; and
AJR102,1,87 Whereas, every year approximately 40,000 babies are born in the United States
8with congenital heart defects; and
AJR102,1,109 Whereas, some congenital heart defects are not diagnosed until months or
10years after birth; and
AJR102,1,1211 Whereas, undiagnosed congenital heart conditions cause many cases of sudden
12cardiac death in young athletes; and
AJR102,1,1413 Whereas, despite these statistics, newborns and young athletes are not
14routinely screened for congenital heart defects; and

1Whereas, Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week provides an opportunity
2for families whose lives have been affected to celebrate life and to remember loved
3ones lost, to honor dedicated health professionals, and to meet others and know they
4are not alone; and
AJR102,2,85 Whereas, the American Heart Association and Mended Little Hearts believe
6the establishment of Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week will also provide the
7opportunity to share experience and information with the public and the media, in
8order to raise public awareness about congenital heart defects; now, therefore, be it
AJR102,2,13 9Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
10legislature proclaims February 7 to 14, 2010, to be Congenital Heart Defect
11Awareness Week and encourages all citizens to increase awareness, education, and
12services for congenital heart defects, which each year affect thousands of babies in
13Wisconsin.
