AJR77,1,32 Whereas, over 42,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year
3in the United States and over 35,000 will die from the disease; and
AJR77,1,54 Whereas, pancreatic cancer is the deadliest cancer and the fourth leading cause
5of cancer death in the United States; and
AJR77,1,76 Whereas, approximately 710 deaths will occur in 2009 in the state of Wisconsin
7alone due to pancreatic cancer; and
AJR77,1,108 Whereas, 76 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first year of
9their diagnosis, and 95 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first five
10years; and
AJR77,1,1311 Whereas, there is no cure for pancreatic cancer and there have been no
12significant improvements in early detection, treatment methods, or survival rates in
13the last 30 years; and

1Whereas, when symptoms of pancreatic cancer present themselves, it is usually
2too late for an optimistic prognosis, and the average life expectancy of those
3diagnosed with metastasis disease is only three to six months; and
AJR77,2,54 Whereas, incidence of pancreatic cancer is approximately 50 percent higher in
5African Americans than in other ethnic groups; and
AJR77,2,76 Whereas, the federal government invests less money in pancreatic cancer
7research than it does in any of the other leading cancer killers; and
AJR77,2,118 Whereas, the good health and well-being of the residents of the state of
9Wisconsin are enhanced as a direct result of increased awareness about pancreatic
10cancer and research into early detection, causes, and effective treatments; now,
11therefore, be it
AJR77,2,15 12Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
13legislature proclaims November 2009 to be Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month and
14encourages all citizens to increase awareness of, education for, and services for
15pancreatic cancer in Wisconsin.
