AJR82,1,1 Relating to: proclaiming October 2009 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

AJR82,1,3 Whereas, the chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some time in a woman's life is about one in eight; and

AJR82,1,6 Whereas, in 2009 an estimated 192,370 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States, including 3,480 in Wisconsin, and 40,170 women will die from breast cancer in the United States, including 750 Wisconsin residents; and

AJR82,1,8 Whereas, breast cancer profoundly impacts the lives of men and women, patients and partners, individuals, businesses, communities, and our state; and

AJR82,1,10 Whereas, since the 1990's breast cancer incidence rates and the chance of dying from breast cancer have steadily declined; and

AJR82,1,13 Whereas, organizations like Susan G. Komen for the Cure along with other nonprofit organizations have helped bring incidence and death rates down and lead the fight to find a cure for breast cancer; and

AJR82,2,3 Whereas, over the past 27 years Susan G. Komen for the Cure has raised and invested more than $1.5 billion into cutting edge research and community outreach, education, and support programs; and

AJR82,2,6 Whereas, today, more than 1.5 million people run annually in Komen Race for the Cure events in more than 120 U.S. and 14 international cities, including races in Madison, Milwaukee, and, next year, in Wausau; and

AJR82,2,8 Whereas, prevention, early detection, and treatment of breast cancer saves lives, saves money, and improves the quality of life for all Wisconsin citizens; and

AJR82,2,13 Whereas, from October 19 through October 31 the Wisconsin State Capitol dome will be lit with pink lights recognizing contributions made by thousands of volunteers who have worked to find the cures for breast cancer and acknowledging the need to continue those efforts until breast cancer is defeated; now, therefore, be it

AJR82,2,18 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature proclaims the month of October 2009 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month throughout the state and encourages all state residents to recognize the importance of prevention and early detection, the vital need for the investment in research, and the shared commitment to finding the cures for breast cancer.
