AJR98,1,32 Whereas, John Muir was born April 21, 1838, in Scotland, and moved to
3Wisconsin at the age of 11, to a farm near Portage called Fountain Lake Farm; and
AJR98,1,64 Whereas, at age 22, Muir enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and
5received his first botany lesson, which inspired a deeper and enthusiastic interest in
6nature; and
AJR98,1,97 Whereas, in 1867, Muir walked 1,000 miles from Indiana to Florida by "the
8wildest, leafiest, and least trodden way" he could find, and continued his travels to
9California; and
AJR98,1,1210 Whereas, President Theodore Roosevelt visited California in 1903, spending
11time with Muir, and becoming convinced of the need to protect the Yosemite Valley
12through federal management; and
AJR98,1,1413 Whereas, Muir was among the most influential natural preservationists in the
14United States; and

1Whereas, his writings about our natural heritage — some 300 articles and 12
2books — have served to inspire conservationists, environmentalists, and lovers of
3nature for over a century; and
AJR98,2,74 Whereas, his closest friend, advisor, and champion for many decades was a
5Wisconsin woman, Jeanne Carr, whom he met while at the university, and with
6whom he corresponded and remained close for decades, preserving his ties to the
7state he called home as a youth; now, therefore, be it
AJR98,2,10 8Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
9Wisconsin legislature declare 2010 to be the Year of John Muir in Wisconsin, and
10commend this observance to all citizens.
