AJR123,1,32 Whereas, Lauri J. Wynn was born in 1930, in Harlem, New York, and died on
3December 18, 2013, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and
AJR123,1,64 Whereas, Lauri J. Wynn spent the majority of her life living and working in
5Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a teacher, striving to make Milwaukee a greater city by
6nurturing the empowerment of youth, adults, and the community; and
AJR123,1,107 Whereas, Lauri J. Wynn began her teaching career in the Chicago Public
8Schools in 1956, teaching high school history and working as an elementary school
9teacher, before accepting a position teaching in the Milwaukee Public Schools, where
10she served from 1965 to 1983; and
AJR123,1,1511 Whereas, Lauri J. Wynn's dedication to teaching led to her becoming the first
12African-American woman to serve as president of the Wisconsin Education
13Association Council, in 1973, and later serving as an executive committee member
14of the National Education Association (NEA) from 1975 to 1980 before becoming a
15policy advisor on black affairs for Governor Tony Earl from 1983 to 1986; and

1Whereas, Lauri J. Wynn helped lead the fight to desegregate the Milwaukee
2Public Schools, along with attorney Lloyd Barbee, by delivering a detailed
3presentation on the problems associated with segregation within the Milwaukee
4Public Schools to the NEA Executive Board in Washington, D.C., securing a
5substantial grant from the NEA to help the school desegregation movement in
6Milwaukee and elsewhere; and
AJR123,2,97 Whereas, Lauri J. Wynn's lifetime of work and tireless efforts in education
8made others realize that, in Lauri's words, "it takes the entire community to make
9the difference in things that challenge the human spirit"; now, therefore, be it
AJR123,2,13 10Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
11Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Lauri J. Wynn
12contributed to this state and her community, express their sorrow at her death, and
13extend their condolences to her family and friends; and, be it further
AJR123,2,15 14Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
15resolution to Ms. Wynn's daughter, Hillary Wynn.
