SB393,1,3 1An Act to amend 8.10 (4) (b), 8.15 (2), 8.20 (5) and 8.40 (1) of the statutes;
2relating to: providing a printed name for signers of nomination papers and
3petitions.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, each individual who signs a nomination paper for a
candidate to appear on an election ballot, or who signs a referendum or recall
petition, must also list the municipality where the individual resides for voting
purposes, the street and number, if any, of the address where the individual resides,
and the date on which the individual signed the paper. This bill also requires that
each individual who signs a nomination paper or petition legibly print his or her
name in a space provided next to his or her signature.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB393,1 4Section 1. 8.10 (4) (b) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB393,2,35 8.10 (4) (b) Only one signature per person for the same office is valid. In
6addition to his or her signature, in order for the signature to be valid, each signer of
7a nomination paper shall legibly print his or her name in a space provided next to

1his or her signature and
shall list his or her municipality of residence for voting
2purposes, the street and number, if any, on which the signer resides, and the date of
3signing.
SB393,2 4Section 2. 8.15 (2) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB393,2,105 8.15 (2) Only one signature per person for the same office is valid. In addition
6to his or her signature, in order for the signature to be valid, each signer of a
7nomination paper shall legibly print his or her name in a space provided next to his
8or her signature and
shall list his or her municipality of residence for voting
9purposes, the street and number, if any, on which the signer resides, and the date of
10signing.
SB393,3 11Section 3. 8.20 (5) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB393,2,1812 8.20 (5) Only one signature per person for the same office is valid. In addition
13to his or her signature, in order for the signature to be valid, each signer shall legibly
14print his or her name in a space provided next to his or her signature and
shall list
15his or her municipality of residence for voting purposes, the street and number, if any,
16on which the signer resides, and the date of signing. Signers of each nomination
17paper shall reside in the same jurisdiction or district which the candidate named
18therein will represent, if elected.
SB393,4 19Section 4. 8.40 (1) of the statutes is amended to read:
SB393,3,220 8.40 (1) In addition to any other requirements provided by law, each separate
21sheet of each petition for an election, including a referendum, shall have on the face
22at the top in boldface print the word "PETITION". Each signer of such a petition shall
23affix his or her signature to the petition, accompanied by his or her municipality of
24residence for voting purposes, the street and number, if any, on which the signer
25resides, and the date of signing. In addition, each signer shall legibly print his or her

1name in a space provided next to his or her signature. No signature is valid under
2this subsection unless the signer satisfies the requirements under this subsection.
SB393,5 3Section 5. Initial applicability.
SB393,3,54 (1) This act first applies to nomination papers and petitions for which the initial
5circulation date is on or after the effective date of this subsection.
SB393,6 6Section 6. Effective date.
SB393,3,87 (1) This act takes effect on January 8, 2014, or the day after publication,
8whichever is later.
