SJR18,1,1 1Relating to: declaring May 2013 Youth Traffic Safety Month.
SJR18,1,22 Whereas, the month of May is National Youth Traffic Safety Month; and
SJR18,1,43 Whereas, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death of young people
4in Wisconsin; and
SJR18,1,75 Whereas, teenagers are over-represented in traffic crashes; while teenagers
6account for only 6 percent of licensed drivers in this state, they are involved in 16
7percent of all car crashes; and
SJR18,1,108 Whereas, car accidents involving teenagers are often the result of distraction,
9inexperience, and risky behaviors such as tailgating, speeding, underestimating the
10danger of driver distractions, driving at night, and not buckling up; and
SJR18,1,1311 Whereas, the month of May is an important time for teenagers to focus on
12driving safely as prom, graduation, and summer trip season greatly increase the
13potential for traffic-related deaths and injuries involving young drivers; and
SJR18,1,1514 Whereas, the youth of this state are a vital asset we cannot afford to lose to
15traffic accidents; and

1Whereas, safety awareness campaigns that emphasize consequences are a
2proven strategy to help young drivers develop safe driving attitudes and prevent
3traffic accidents; and
SJR18,2,74 Whereas, Wisconsin citizens, including parents, educators, law enforcement,
5elected leaders, community leaders, and youth themselves, must play a part in
6protecting and educating this state's youth and their families about youth traffic
7safety; now, therefore, be it
SJR18,2,10 8Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
9Wisconsin legislature proclaim May 2013 as Youth Traffic Safety Month in Wisconsin
10and commend this observance to all residents.
