2declaring Thursday, October 13, 2016, as Marshfield Clinic Day in Wisconsin.
AJR114,1,63 Whereas, in 1916, six physicians—K.W. Doege, M.D.; William Hipke, M.D.;
4Victor Mason, M.D.; Walter G. Sexton, M.D.; H.H. Milbee, M.D.; and Roy P. Potter,
5M.D.—who practiced in Marshfield joined in group practice and named the practice
6after the community; and
AJR114,1,97 Whereas, the founding focus of the Marshfield Clinic was patient care,
8research, and education, and those founding principles continue to be the core
9mission of the clinic today; and
AJR114,1,1410 Whereas, Marshfield Clinic is the largest private-group medical practice in
11Wisconsin and one of the largest rural-group practices in the United States, with
12more than 700 physicians representing over 80 different medical specialties and
13subspecialties, from cardiology and neurology to oncology, more than 6,000
14employees, and over 50 locations in northern, central, and western Wisconsin; and

1Whereas, Marshfield Clinic is a not-for-profit organization that has provided
2access to health care for those in need who do not have the ability to pay; and
AJR114,2,43 Whereas, Marshfield Clinic has committed itself to providing care to patients
4in rural Wisconsin and beyond; and
AJR114,2,65 Whereas, Marshfield Clinic has nearly 4 million annual patient encounters and
6350,000 annual unique patients in the clinic system; and
AJR114,2,107 Whereas, in addition to Marshfield Clinic Health System, Marshfield Clinic
8has expanded and formed entities in the organization that are beneficial to the
9community and consistent with its mission of world-class patient care, research, and
10education including:
AJR114,2,14 11 Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation, a research organization with six
12research centers: National Farm Medicine Center, Clinical Epidemiology and
13Population Health, Center for Human Genetics, Biomedical Informatics Research
14Center, Clinical Research Center, and Institute for Oral and Systemic Health.
AJR114,2,17 15Laird Center for Medical Research, a medical research and education facility
16on the campus of Marshfield Clinic, named after former Congressman and U.S.
17Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird.
AJR114,2,20 18Lawton Center for Research and Education, dedicated to Dr. Ben Lawton,
19a prominent thoracic surgeon at Marshfield Clinic who practiced until his death in
20the 1980s and served as a president of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.
AJR114,2,22 21Marshfield Clinic's Division of Education, which helps provide residency
22programs for medical school graduates in a variety of medical disciplines.
AJR114,3,2 23 Marshfield Clinic Laboratories, a system of laboratories that employs more
24than 450 people and performs more than 20 million tests annually. In addition to

1human medicine, it has established separate service lines for forensic toxicology, food
2safety, and veterinary diagnostics.
AJR114,3,5 3Security Health Plan of Wisconsin, Inc., Marshfield Clinic Health System's
4health maintenance organization, which began in 1971 as one of the earliest HMOs
5in the country.
AJR114,3,11 6Marshfield Food Safety, LLC, a food testing laboratory founded by the clinic
7in 2002, which has grown to be a network of 12 laboratories providing services to
8ensure safety of food and food production areas using pathogen/microbiological
9detection, plus analysis of food chemistry including nutrition components,
10proximates, elemental impurities, pesticide residues, drug residues, allergens, and
11mycotoxins.

13dedicated to delivering and managing cutting-edge products and services for health
14care providers and a product of Marshfield Clinic's 50-year commitment to the use
15of information technology to benefit patients and physicians in the pursuit of
16excellent medical care; and
AJR114,3,2217 Whereas, Marshfield Clinic has demonstrated time and time again what it is
18to be on the leading edge of patient care delivery and medical research, as
19demonstrated by its early involvement in the use of computerized medical records,
20creation of a provider-sponsored health plan, and success in the Physician Group
21Practice Demonstration Project and as noted through international recognition and
22numerous national awards; now, therefore, be it

24hereby declares Thursday, October 13, 2016, as Marshfield Clinic Day in Wisconsin.
